Moving is stressful anywhere, but moving to or from Boston can be more so. With its knobbly one-way streets and low-clearance bridges, the Hub provides a challenge even for the most experienced movers.

However, whether you’re moving your office across the street, a grand piano into your three-story walk-up, or taking a lifetime’s worth of memories to the other side of the country, there are some excellent moving companies out there waiting to do the legwork for you.

With hundreds of movers to choose from, finding the right fit can seem like one of the major tasks on a never-ending to-do moving list. That’s why I’ve reviewed some of the best moving companies nationwide and narrowed it down to the top five movers in Massachusetts.

Using Today’s Homeowner’s proprietary review standards, I rated movers on reputation, cost, service offerings, and more to help you make an informed choice of a moving company. I also included sample quotes for a 760-mile move (the distance between Boston and Toledo, Ohio to give you a realistic idea of pricing for each company. By partnering with a reliable mover, you can save money, avoid scams, and ensure a smooth moving experience from start to finish.

We’ve done the heavy lifting for you, so find a comfortable position, and let’s cross “find a mover” off your list.

Today’s Homeowner Tips
All FMCSA-registered interstate movers are required under federal law to offer at least two standard liability coverage options. Basic liability usually comes at no additional charge. Still, the coverage is minimal: at 60 cents per pound of goods, you’d only receive around $15 if the movers broke your brand-new 50-inch TV. Full-value coverage (also called replacement coverage) usually costs 1% to 2% of the total estimated value of your household, and it holds the mover responsible for the replacement value of lost or damaged goods or shipments — made through repair, replacement, or cash compensation.

Top 5 Massachusetts Moving Companies

American Van Lines: Most Transparent Pricing
Highlights
  • If you’re moving to or from Massachusetts, I recommend JK Moving Services. On the pricier end, JK Moving boasts 45 years of industry experience, BBB accreditation, great reviews, and sustainability efforts. This mover offers full control over creating a moving service package using an a la carte menu. JK specializes in corporate and commercial moving, making them an excellent choice for businesses — particularly government offices, labs, and law firms — moving to or from the Boston area, one of the nation’s top political, intellectual, and legal centers. With a zero-emission goal, JK uses a boxless moving strategy with reusable crates and recycled materials, making them the ideal choice for environmentally conscious customers in one of the country’s leading states for climate action. Note that JK doesn’t offer local moving services outside of the greater D.C. area.
  • Massachusetts has long been one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S., following D.C., Hawaii, California, and Washington State. However, you can save significantly on your Massachusetts move by planning two or three months ahead. If possible, avoid moving in spring and summer. Aim for a weekday move and have a flexible three-day moving window.
  • The five companies reviewed here are all quality movers. They’re all a perfect fit for someone, but each has limitations worth noting. American Van Lines only operates in the lower 48 states. Safeway Moving and JK Moving Services lack local moving in Massachusetts. Moving APT works with 2,500 different partners, so service can be inconsistent. Finally, U-Pack doesn’t offer many customization options or services outside of container shipping.

My Expert Recommendation

My top recommendation for moving companies in Massachusetts goes to JK Moving Services. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited JK Moving, and BBB reviewers give it an A+. JK Moving offers a nearly unbeatable selection of customization options and specializes in corporate and commercial moving with services like data archiving, floor planning, and IT removal. These credentials make it an excellent choice for businesses — particularly government offices, labs, and law firms — moving to or from the Boston area, one of the nation’s top political, intellectual, and legal centers.

If you need expert planning for your move, JK Moving offers teams certified by the International Office Moving Institute (IOMI). If your move is international, JK Moving is one of only 34 FIDI/FAIM-certified movers in the United States — the gold standard in international shipping. JK Moving is praised for its commercial and residential relocation efforts, including by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and The Washington Business Journal.

JK Moving partners with McCollister’s Auto Logistics for domestic vehicle shipping, further expanding its service. However, JK Moving is a higher-end mover and doesn’t provide local moving services outside of the greater Washington, D.C. area. The company offers 0% same-as-cash financing through Enhancify, something that can help offset at least initial moving costs. As a bonus, JK Moving has a zero-emissions goal and uses a boxless, reusable-crate strategy to reduce any negative impact on the environment.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly mover — and you’re willing to do most of the legwork — U-Pack is a solid DIY alternative. It’s a self-service moving company with cubes small enough to fit into a single parking space but large enough to hold the contents of a small apartment. You pack and load the container/s yourself, and then U-Pack transports your belongings. On the delivery end, you unload and unpack your shipment. This option doesn’t offer much in terms of customization, but it’s a flexible, affordable, and highly efficient alternative: U-Pack claims to complete most interstate moves within two to five business days.

Today’s Homeowner Tips

My top recommendation for moving companies in Massachusetts goes to JK Moving Services.

Massachusetts Moving Companies I Didn’t Include

There are many quality moving companies in Massachusetts, and one solid movers that didn’t make our list is North American Van Lines (NAVL). North American Van Lines is another excellent mover that offers basic services that are industry-standard. However, it scores lower than competitors in categories like transparency. It also doesn’t offer sample quotes over the phone, so I won’t be able to give you an idea of what your move would cost with NAVL.

Our Reviews of the Best Moving Companies in Massachusetts

Most Transparent Pricing

American Van Lines

4.0

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Price Matching Available

American Van Lines earned the distinction of “Most Transparent Pricing” here at Today’s Homeowner, standing out from other moving companies in Massachusetts because of its commitment to clear pricing. Notably, AVL displays sample pricing and special deals prominently on its website, which has city-specific blog posts and comprehensive details on services, expenses, and expertise. Moreover, AVL’s website provides a fairly accurate quick-quote feature.

Like Safeway Moving, American Van Lines ensures reliability and service quality by functioning as a carrier with a fleet of trucks, and experienced, thoroughly vetted moving crews. AVL goes a step further by training all employees in-house. This is refreshing to find in an industry where quality can be inconsistent, and labor is routinely outsourced.

American Van Lines has some limitations compared to other Massachusetts movers. It doesn’t provide services like car shipping, home staging, or junk removal. This mover only handles interstate moves within the contiguous U.S. states and only manages local moves in North Carolina, Dallas-Fort Worth, and South Florida. If you’re eyeing a far-flung state or planning a local move within Massachusetts, I recommend you check out Moving APT instead.

It’s also worth noting that AVL usually requires a higher up-front deposit — around 50% — to secure a moving date and time. If flexibility is a priority, consider U-Pack, which doesn’t require a deposit at all, or JK Moving Services, which only charges a $250 non-refundable deposit.

American Van Lines is a dependable choice if you’re looking for a versatile mover with transparent pricing to help with your long-distance move to, from, or within Massachusetts. We gave American an overall score of 8.5 thanks to its sample pricing, customer support, A+ rating with the BBB, and stellar reviews. With its comprehensive website and accurate sample quotes, American Van Lines facilitates easy comparisons with other companies, enabling customers to make informed decisions.

While AVL is a reliable option for straightforward moves within the U.S. mainland, it doesn’t provide services like in-house junk removal or car shipping, and it operates exclusively within the lower 48 states. Similar to Safeway Moving and JK Moving Services, AVL lacks local moving services in Massachusetts.

AVL caters to the needs of discerning Massachusetts residents by extending specialized care for pianos, antiques, and luxury amenities like climate-controlled personal storage facilities. AVL is a top choice for art enthusiasts because of its proven track record of employing highly skilled teams to handle individual artworks and entire collections with care.

AVL also provides in-house training to employees rather than relying on contract labor and training. My AVL representative assured me that AVL crews undergo twice-annual training sessions and boast an average of 10 years of moving experience per employee.

American Van Lines earned a 9 out of 10 in this category for comprehensive and higher-end services like climate-controlled storage vaults and specialized solutions for valuables. However, it doesn’t offer international moving or local moving nationwide.

Limitations aside, American remains a top choice for Bay Staters embarking on long-distance and interstate moves, with high-quality standard solutions like packing, unpacking, loading, unloading, and secure storage.

Getting a quote from American Van Lines was easy, and my full-service quote included 50 boxes and 30 days of free storage, plus disassembly, reassembly, padding, wrapping, loading, and unloading. The quote for my two-bedroom, 760-mile move was as follows:

  • Packing services only: $1,355
  • Packing without boxes for mattress and TV: $1,052
  • Transportation without packing: $4,302
  • Full-service (transportation with packing): $5,455

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario for a single-family home with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary, depending on the required additional services and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

If you’re considering self-packing, I recommend comparing the cost of packing materials from your chosen moving company with those available at local stores. According to my AVL representative, boxes for my mattress and TV alone would cost about $300. AVL offers city-specific promotions and seasonal deals, including an annual spring promotion, so be sure to inquire about these offers when calling.

We rated American Van Lines a 7 out of 10 for its customizable options, highlighting it as the primary area in which this moving company could improve. While AVL provides specialized services such as piano and antique moving, it doesn’t offer junk removal, car shipping, or home staging. If you’re seeking a broader range of services, including home staging, consider exploring options with Moving APT — the only mover on this list that offers home staging.

American Van Lines earned a perfect score in this category, with a solid reputation, mostly positive reviews across various platforms, and an A+ rating with the BBB. Customer reviews praise the company’s outstanding customer service and punctual deliveries. Negative reviews cite unexpected costs and unreliable service. Note that, as with other moving companies, a Yelp score on the lower end is industry standard.

Most Common Praise for American Van Lines

Satisfied customers consistently praise American Van Lines for its thorough communication and flexibility. Positive reviews emphasize reliable support with prompt responses, and customers praise representatives for their seamless coordination and efficiency.

Most Common Criticism for American Van Lines

Unhappy customers express frustration over carelessness, leading to damaged items and shipments, plus miscommunication around pricing.

We awarded American Van Lines a category score of 8.7 along with the title of “Most Transparent Pricing,” thanks to this mover’s commitment to clear pricing, including sample costs on its website and detailed price breakdowns in estimates. AVL lost points because its website lacked a display of customer service hours and a list of added service fees.

Today’s Homeowner Tips
Transparency should be a critical factor when considering a moving company, as it fosters accountability among movers and their partners in everything from pricing to accessibility and contributes significantly to the company’s trustworthiness.
Best Flat-rate Pricing

Safeway Moving

4.1

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

Because it is a carrier, Safeway handles its own moves and doesn’t broker them out to a third party. This self-reliance ensures reliability and consistency. Safeway is a solid option if the thought of trusting a broker with your belongings makes you uneasy. Similar to American Van Lines, Safeway’s commitment to quality includes climate-controlled trucks and specialized protection for pianos and works of art. It is another quality choice for people who have particular moving needs, ones requiring extra attention and care.

We gave Safeway the title of “Best Flat-Rate Pricing” thanks to its specialized model, which offers prices based on space rather than weight. This different approach makes for more transparency and accuracy in quotes and minimizes surprises on moving day. Because it takes measurements during the price-quote process, Safeway delivers more precise estimates compared to the weight-based systems used by other movers.

However, if you like the space-based system and you’re looking for a more DIY-friendly option, check out U-Pack — an affordable, efficient self-service container option that also prices by space.

Like American Van Lines and JK Moving Services, Safeway doesn’t cater to local moves in Massachusetts, so you’re better off looking at Moving APT if you’re looking for full-service local moving and U-Pack if you’re hoping to DIY your local MA move. Another important thing to note is that, despite operating as a carrier, Safeway only offers GPS tracking on select trucks, requiring manual tracking for trucks that don’t have it. If in-house tracking is a priority for your long-distance move, consider American Van Lines or JK Moving Services.

Unfortunately, Safeway’s website is poorly designed and lacks essential features and information, such as an FAQ section, and provides only minimal insight into what services they offer, so you’ll need to call for more details.

If you’re looking for a trustworthy mover to help with specialized services, such as hoisting your grand piano into your second-floor window or carrying your delicate antiques up your spiral staircase, Safeway is a top choice. If you’re moving individual art pieces or an art collection, check out American Van Lines, which has similar services along with highly vetted and trained crews for moving valuables. Remember, however, that both movers lack local moving services in Massachusetts, so this is only applicable if you’re moving long-distance.

In-depth information about Safeway Moving’s services and pricing in Massachusetts isn’t readily available on the company’s website, so you need to call for more details. Note the lack of reliable GPS tracking despite Safeway’s carrier status. For most of us, it’s inconvenient to have to call the truck driver directly for updates on the shipment or estimated arrival times. For a mover with reliable GPS, check out JK Moving Services.

Suppose you’re undertaking a long-distance or international move. In that case, Safeway is a reliable option with free storage and a wide range of moving needs, earning it 8 of 10 points in this category. As I mentioned earlier, Safeway Moving doesn’t have local moving services in Massachusetts. If you’re moving locally, you should consider Moving APT. However, in contrast with American Van Lines, this provider does offer international moving.

Cost

My Safeway quote was easy to obtain over the phone and included assembly and disassembly, full packing service, 30 days of free storage, a $250 first-time customer discount. It also includes smaller fees like basic packing materials, origin and destination fees, and fuel surcharges, as well as basic insurance coverage with a max cargo protection of $10,000. I recommend comparing the price of packing materials from your chosen provider with those at your local stores — provided you plan on packing some or all of your move yourself. My Safeway representative let me know that just my TV, mattress, and treadmill boxes would cost me around $425. So, there’s room to save if you’re on a tight budget.

For my two-bedroom, 760-mile move, Safeway quoted me:

  • Self-packing option: $3,733
  • Full-service option: $4,452
  • Estimated 550 cf. (3850 lbs)

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario for a single-family home with a move date set eight weeks away. Available Discounts

If Safeway is a top choice for your move, plan ahead so you can take full advantage of the company’s standard discount for bookings made more than 30 days in advance. As always, ask your company rep for other available discounts. Safeway’s website mentions discounts for a range of groups, including veterans, seniors, students, teachers, and first responders.

We awarded Safeway Moving a 9 here because of its vast range of customization options. It offers the most common moving services, including car shipping and custom crating, but not home staging. Standard furniture assembly and disassembly are included in pricing, and packing materials are available for purchase. Safeway’s piano moving service stands out for its use of climate-controlled trucks, with an added protection option for valuable instruments. Each move includes basic valuation coverage at $0.60 per pound, standard in the industry, with a maximum cargo protection of $10,000.

We gave Safeway a 9 out of 10 in this category despite its B rating from the BBB, thanks to generally positive reviews across various platforms. As I noted with American Van Lines, most moving companies have low Yelp ratings — suggesting potential limitations or biases within the platform itself rather than reflecting the quality of the companies reviewed.

Most Common Praise for Safeway Moving

Happy Safeway customers highlight the mover’s commitment to providing care and attention to detail throughout the moving process. Positive reviews mention unexpected discounts, helpful support during the quoting process, and the ability to reach customer support even outside of regular posted hours. Customer service is the most common area of praise, but unfortunately, I can’t personally confirm the quality of support because I was unable to reach a representative.

Most Common Criticism for Safeway Moving

Unhappy Safeway customers reported scratched or broken furniture and damaged boxes. Several customers complained about outsourced moves despite Safeway’s claim of operating solely as a carrier. These issues emphasize the importance of talking to your representative about valuation coverage, which ensures adequate protection against potential loss or damage during a move.

With a 7 for transparency, Safeway Moving lost points mainly for the lack of sample pricing on its website and limited GPS tracking availability (tracking isn’t guaranteed at the time of booking and varies among trucks). While Safeway provides a quick-quote feature online, I recommend preparing a detailed list of items and measurements and calling customer service for an accurate quote.
Safeway wins a point for maintaining transparency about being a carrier rather than a broker. However, some customers have reported instances of outsourced work, something that’s definitely worth noting and — if proven — could lead to a lower score in this category.

Best Quoting Experience

Moving APT

3.9

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Use Code APT23 For 20% Off

Moving APT is a broker with one of the largest U.S. networks and 2,500 moving partners. This size allows Moving APT to offer a comprehensive range of services to customers in Massachusetts, and APT leverages this network to negotiate the most competitive prices among carriers. APT has a straightforward price quote process that’s refreshing compared with lengthy calls and email exchanges other movers require for a quote. During my call with an APT representative, I learned that APT has a price-matching policy that matches any quote from another reputable moving company. In my book, this shows the company’s trust in its competence and dedication to transparent and affordable services. Moving APT is the only mover on our list to offer home staging in Massachusetts — an invaluable service that relieves a significant burden for many individuals, families, and those with disabilities.

Working with a broker has its pros and cons. While Moving APT might negotiate the best price, service quality may vary because it hinges on the moving partner chosen to handle your move. This inconsistency — a prevalent problem among brokers — can manifest in communication issues and unexpected estimate changes, underscoring the importance of understanding this dynamic if you’re considering using a broker for your move. Similar to Safeway Moving, APT’s website lacks user-friendliness, and while it contains a lot of helpful information, it’s too complex and confusing to navigate.

Moving APT stands out among Massachusetts moving companies by offering a range of services, including the rare feature of home staging, thanks to having one of the nation’s largest networks of moving partners. If you’re considering going with a broker, Moving APT is a dependable choice. With more than 20 years of experience, it has reliability, expertise, and a track record of success. It is capable of addressing many specialized moving needs.

APT’s website needs work but the mover makes up for it with a smooth quote process. As a broker, APT’s GPS tracking services are limited, but as always, it’s worth asking your representative if you can opt to get matched with a company that offers it. If not, consider buying Apple AirTags to attach to a few of your items. You may or may not be able to get real-time updates like this, but you should be able to locate your shipment in case of accidental loss or a moving scam. Whether home staging is a necessity or simply an attractive option to alleviate your moving burden, I recommend Moving APT — especially if you’re looking for this service as part of an affordable full-service package.

Moving APT earned a perfect score here for offering everything from local moving to storage solutions. APT provides industry-standard limited-liability protection at $0.60 per pound, and its full-value protection plan includes a $500 deductible. I recommend considering this if you’re going with a broker because it will help protect you in case your third-party moving partner doesn’t uphold APT’s values or commitment to service quality. As always, talk to your representative about the best coverage option.

At the time of this writing, Moving APT offers all of the services below in Massachusetts:

Moving APT’s basic service rates are high, but if you take advantage of this mover’s same-day booking discount, it’s still an affordable moving option. In my quote, booking on the day of my call would save me $1,356. Similar to Safeway, APT offers 30 days of free storage, but its packing services are expensive if you don’t choose full service and book on the same day. Without the same-day discount, packing alone would cost me around $2,000.

For my two-bedroom, 760-mile move, my quote with Moving APT was as follows:

  • Packing services only: $2,047
  • Transportation without packing: $6,000
  • Transportation with packing: $7,856
  • Transportation with packing using a same-day booking discount: $6,500

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Omaha, NE to Nashville, TN, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

Moving APT is one of the best companies to find discounts. You’ll get a flex coupon for providing a three-day moving window and a 15% discount for providing your name and email after using its quick-quote tool. I’m surprised I haven’t seen this type of discount with more movers because it’s beneficial to both the company and its customers, and it’s also a huge selling point. In addition, APT provides discretionary discounts for various groups, including seniors, military personnel, and early bookers, with the best savings achieved by booking at least two months in advance.

Moving APT scored a perfect 10, thanks to an extensive range of options made possible by its network of 2,500 partners. The rating includes the rare service of home staging. APT partners with licensed and insured auto-shipping companies to move your vehicle. This mover also sells packing materials and provides custom crating. Still, it’s important to note that these tend to be expensive, so it’s worth comparing prices for packing materials before committing.

Most Common Praise for Moving APT

From prompt responses to inquiries to attention to detail both over the phone and on-site, Moving APT’s commitment to high standards of professionalism is clear from reading most reviews. Happy customers praise this provider’s stellar customer service and reliability.

Most Common Criticism for Moving APT

Unhappy Moving APT customers emphasize issues like unexpected cost increases, delivery delays, extra charges, and encounters with specific unprofessional crews. With a network of over 2,500 partners, some third parties fail to uphold Moving APT’s commitment to quality. As I mentioned earlier, the brokers on this list are excellent companies, but if you find the vast uncertainty of who’s showing up on moving day worrying, consider partnering with a carrier instead. If this is you, be sure to check out Safeway Moving — a carrier with an in-house team and a fleet of trucks.

We gave Moving APT one of the lowest scores in this category with a 5.3 out of 10 because of its business hours, unclearly listed pricing, and additional fees being largely absent on a poorly designed website. This mover also lost a point for a lack of GPS tracking. APT’ clearly states its status as a broker, so it won a point for that. As is common with brokers, APT can’t guarantee tracking services because it doesn’t conduct the physical move itself but contracts it to a third party. If you’re determined to use APT for your move but tracking is important to you, talk to your rep about the possibility of using a third-party tracking system, or check out my tip from a previous section on using Apple AirTags to track your belongings.

Most Customizable Moving Experience

JK Moving Services

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

With solid reviews along with an A+ rating from the BBB and BBB accreditation, JK Moving Services is my top choice if you’re looking for a mover in the Bay State that offers a customizable a la carte menu of services, caters to a variety of specialty needs, and prioritizes sustainability. JK Moving Services has more than 40 years of experience as a nationwide broker and carrier. It stands out among Massachusetts movers for its fully customizable moving service packages and commitment to sustainability, including a zero-waste boxless strategy. While this is a higher-end mover, JK Moving has 0% same-as-cash rates through a partnership with Enhancify — an easy way to manage the initial financial aspect of your move.

Unfortunately, JK Moving Services — along with American Van Lines and Safeway Moving — doesn’t offer local moving services in Massachusetts or anywhere outside of the greater Washington, D.C. area. It’s also important to note that as a broker/carrier, JK Moving uses third-party partners for long-distance moves. While this allows for cross-country availability, it sometimes results in inconsistent levels of service quality and customer care, as experienced with other brokers in this review.

While JK Moving has plenty to offer, it’s the most expensive mover on this list. Also, because of the complexity of JK’s fully customized packages, there’s no sample pricing online. So, if you’re looking for a quick online quote to compare to other movers, you won’t find it here.

JK Moving Services is pricey compared to the other movers on this list. However, I do think this is justified by the company’s reputation, sustainability efforts, level of customization available, and overall quality. JK Moving is an ideal choice if you’re a discerning Massachusetts customer who wants to tailor your moving experience to your exact needs.

This company is the only one to offer full control over crafting your moving service package from the ground up using an a la carte menu of services. JK also provides convenient features like a mobile app for reviewing estimates, and it’s one of the few brokers/carriers that actually offers reliable GPS tracking for shipment monitoring.

JK Moving Services specializes in corporate moves, so if you’re planning to move your laboratory or law firm from Boston to Hartford and you’re looking for a minimally disruptive, luxury moving experience, JK Moving is your best bet. Add a commitment to sustainability — including the use of reusable crates and recycled materials — and this mover aligns even better with the values of discerning and environmentally-conscious customers in one of the country’s leading states for climate action. Even if you may not be undertaking a corporate move, or if you don’t particularly care about the environmental impact of your move, I recommend JK Moving Services to Massachusetts residents willing to pay a little more for a high-end, seamless moving experience.

We gave JK Moving Services a perfect score in this category thanks to a comprehensive range of moving services. While JK Moving provides the most common basic services, its specialty lies in corporate and commercial moving, offering movers in Massachusetts specialized services like data archival, floor planning, and IT removal. These details make JKMoving an excellent choice for businesses — particularly government offices, labs, and law firms — moving to or from the Boston area, one of the nation’s top political, intellectual, and legal centers.

In terms of protection plans, JK Moving offers standard liability and replacement value options. The standard liability covers goods at $0.60 per pound or $50 per item, whichever is less. Replacement value provides minimum coverage of $6 per pound or a $15,000 minimum. JK Moving partners with McCollister’s Auto Logistics for domestic vehicle shipping, further expanding their service capabilities. As I mentioned earlier, it’s important to note that JK Moving is a higher-end mover and that they don’t offer local moving in Massachusetts.

JK Moving offers the following services to Massachusetts customers:

I secured a ballpark estimate for my two-bedroom, 680-mile move, but I couldn’t get a more accurate estimate without a customized package and an in-depth survey of my items. My JK Moving representative let me know that it can’t show sample prices online because of how it fully customizes each move. Both options include basic furniture disassembly and reassembly, wrapping and padding, loading and unloading, and full-value protection. Even though it’s a rough estimate, it’s more expensive than most of the moving estimates in this review. JK Moving charges a $250 deposit, which is non-refundable but low compared to movers like American Van Lines, which charges 25% to 50% up-front.

JK Moving’s ballpark estimate for my two-bedroom, 680-mile move is as follows:

Transportation without packing: $6,500 to $7,500
Transportation with packing: $8,000 to $9,000

Editor’s Note: The cost data provided in this article is based on Today’s Homeowner’s standardized sample moving scenario from Omaha, NE to Nashville, TN, for a single-family home, with a move date set eight weeks away. Please be aware that these estimates may vary depending on factors such as additional services required and market fluctuations. The cost data presented was accurate at the time of writing.

Available Discounts

My JK Moving representative didn’t offer any discounts, and the focus of our conversation was primarily on the importance of planning and scheduling a weekday move for potential savings — a standard recommendation among moving companies.

As previously highlighted, JK Moving excels in tailoring each moving service package to suit the unique needs of the customer. This approach is particularly appealing if you’re seeking greater control over your moving process. With an extensive menu of customizable options, JK Moving offers standard services alongside a diverse array of add-ons, including government moves, employee relocations, and industry-specific commercial moves.

For those in need of specialized services, such as professional packing, custom crating, or junk removal, JK Moving Services stands out as an excellent choice. JK’s vetted, experienced, and regularly trained crews are equipped to handle a wide range of items, including vehicles, pianos, and antiques, while also providing additional protection measures for added peace of mind.

JK Moving Services is BBB-accredited, with an A+ rating on the platform and an excellent reputation across other platforms, even Yelp. Positive reviews frequently highlight the professionalism and punctuality of the moving crews, reflecting the provider’s commitment to rigorous hiring and training standards. Negative feedback often revolves around pricing discrepancies, damage claims, and other issues. Still, JK Moving’s overall positive reputation is solid, especially considering the high number of reviews on both Google and Yelp.

Most Common Praise for JK Moving Services

Satisfied customers highlight clear and consistent communication from representatives throughout the moving process and the accuracy of price estimates. The majority of positive reviews praise JK Moving Services for facilitating a smooth, stress-free moving experience, with emphasis on the friendliness and attentiveness of the moving crews.

Most Common Criticism for JK Moving Services

JK Moving serves as a broker and carrier. Compared to other companies on this list that also hold broker status, JK Moving has fewer negative reviews specifically related to outsourced moves. The most common criticism of JK Moving Services is unreliable customer support. Some customers express dissatisfaction with the level of care received after a positive initial quote experience.

We gave JK Moving Services a 6.3 in this category, with points won for openly acknowledging its status as a broker, offering online and phone booking, and providing a GPS tracking option. Compared to the company’s other category scores, the mover fell short in several areas here. It doesn’t:

  • List additional fees
  • Offer quick quotes
  • Offer binding estimates
  • Make sample prices readily available online

As we’ve said, transparency is an important part of people considering a moving company because it fosters accountability among movers and partners. However, JK Moving’s lack of pricing transparency may be attributed — at least in part — to its unwavering dedication to tailor each move to the individual customer’s needs.

Best Overall Container Service

U-Pack

3.5

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
$25 Off With Code BLOG25

A highly rated, BBB-accredited mover, U-Pack combines Safeway Moving’s straightforward space-based pricing system with American Van Lines’ pricing transparency. It’s my top recommendation for all my DIY movers in Massachusetts. Consistently topping our lists of best moving container companies, U-Pack exceeds what other container companies offer, including trailers for rental and steel weatherproof containers available in three sizes.

With U-Pack, you only pay for the space you use, and you don’t have to put down a deposit to secure a container. While it may not provide as many services or customizations as the full-service companies on this list, U-Pack is a smart option if you’re willing to handle most of the legwork to have more control over your move and stick to a strict budget.

Let’s make one thing clear: U-Pack is a self-service option. You will pack, load, unload, and unpack your belongings. You’ll be responsible for making sure every item is secure, and you’ll disassemble and reassemble furniture. You can find a third-party service to handle the labor, but at that point, you might as well consider other full-service options. Also, U-Pack has plenty of limitations. This mover only operates within the United States (so, no international moves available) and doesn’t offer car shipping or custom crating. It has limited services for moving antiques, pianos, and other highly valuable items.

U-Pack is an excellent budget-friendly DIY solution. This mover doesn’t offer international moving, and it lacks a wide range of customization options, which is why it received a low overall score. However, U-Pack has a solid reputation and a strong transparency score. It offers basic container moving services in all states, so if you’re moving from or to Massachusetts and you’re willing to do most of the moving work, U-Pack is a solid option. U-Pack partners with Moving Staffers to service customers who want to outsource loading and unloading, but as I mentioned, you should look at full-service movers like Moving APT and Safeway Moving if you’re considering outsourcing the labor for your move.

With U-Pack, you can make a free reservation and cancel with no penalty up to one business day before your container is scheduled to arrive. This is in contrast to many other movers’ lack of flexibility, and it’s a big plus in my book. You can lock in a quote without worrying about being out a small fortune if plans significantly change. Overall, U-Pack offers one of the most cost-effective moving strategies out there.

U-Pack has three sizes of weatherproof steel containers, and your customer service representative will help you determine which one you’ll need. After the company drops off the container at your home, you have three days to load it. U-Pack will handle the transportation after that, delivering the container to your new location. You then have three days to unload the container so U-Pack can retrieve it.

U-Pack provides basic moving services across 50 states for local and long-distance moves but lacks international moving services. The company will load, unload, pack, and unpack for you but only through a third-party vendor, Moving Staffers, which isn’t covered by the liability options U-Pack offers. This mover stands out among Massachusetts companies for providing storage options for up to 120 days. Compare that to the window of 0-30 days that most other companies offer.

Cost

I had an efficient and positive experience getting a quote over the phone from U-Pack. This mover’s prices are based on space rather than weight, making it the ideal option for moves that are small and or heavy. The quote for my 760-mile move was:

  • Transportation without packing: $2,365
  • Transportation with storage: $3,487

If you know you can pack your stuff efficiently in a container, U-Pack’s unique pricing system could potentially save you a lot of money. It’s worth asking your U-Pack moving consultant for more advice on cost-saving strategies, but other than avoiding spring and summer moving, neither my representative nor the U-Pack website offered much insight into potential discounts.

Today’s Homeowner Tips
Regardless of which moving company you partner with, you can save big with a flexible timeline. Try to plan your move two or three months in advance, aim for a weekday, and, if possible, avoid moving during the spring/summer rush. Some companies, like Moving APT, offer an additional discount for providing a flexible moving window.

With a 5 out of 10 here, U-Pack received the lowest customization score on this list because of its lack of common services such as junk removal, car shipping, and custom crating. It sells packing materials and offers valuation coverage, but neither carrier negligence liability nor catastrophic liability covers damages resulting from poor packaging — even if the work was done by U-Pack’s partner, Moving Staffers.

U-Pack is BBB-accredited with an A+ score with BBB a strong Yelp score compared to other moving companies on the platform. Customer reviews about services differ based on location, but they’re mostly positive in Massachusetts. Customers mention excellent experiences with representatives during the quoting process, ongoing updates throughout the move, and competitive rates. However, some unhappy customers mention broken items and a poor experience with the mover’s third-party service partner.

Most Common Praise for U-Pack

Customer service is commonly mentioned, including the kindness and attentiveness of representatives and crews. Customers with positive experiences at U-Pack’s Massachusetts locations say the pricing was fair and the process was smooth.

Most Common Criticism for U-Pack

Criticisms mostly highlight broken items upon delivery and miscommunication issues. There’s also frustration over the company’s poor coverage options and failure to take responsibility after accidents with trucks result in complete damage or loss of shipments.

With an 8 out of 10, U-Pack grades out well here. The company website provides comprehensive information about U-Pack’s services in Massachusetts, including sample pricing, a quick quote feature, and a tool indicating customer service availability and support wait time. Containers feature reliable GPS tracking options, and the company emphasizes its role as a carrier, ensuring that your property’s transportation won’t get outsourced to another company. U-Pack lost points because of the absence of clearly listed additional fees on its website, though I’m wondering if there simply aren’t many additional fees involved in its comparatively straightforward pricing model.

What To Look for in a Reputable Moving Company in Massachusetts

No matter which moving company you pick as your moving partner, you must take proactive steps to prioritize the safety of your shipment while adhering to your budget and schedule. Verify the legitimacy and reliability of your chosen mover by requesting its exact company name and its U.S.-DOT number. Ensure the company is licensed by the Massachusetts Commissioner of Transportation and certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

All reputable moving companies that operate in the U.S. must be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and have a USDOT number. Moving companies must also register with the Massachusetts Intrastate Authority to operate and transport household goods in the Bay State.

How To Avoid Moving Scams in Massachusetts

Moving scams are prevalent throughout the country, including Massachusetts, with an increase in crime during the spring and summer months. To safeguard against routine scams like moving companies overcharging you, holding items hostage, or disappearing with your shipment, be proactive. I recommend getting quotes from at least three providers and remaining vigilant for these common red flags in the process:

  • Lowballing a quote without an on-site inspection
  • Requiring cash or suspiciously large deposits (more than 50%)
  • Pressuring you into agreeing as quickly as possible
  • Asking for signatures on blank or incomplete documents
Leaving a generic voicemail and not providing a clear local physical address
  • Not showing licensing information on their website
  • Failing to provide you with a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” (federally required to provide to all customers)

With moving scams on the rise, the FMCSA created a free resource to help protect your move. If you think you were a victim of a moving scam, contact the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General immediately.

Massachusetts Moving Company News

Massachusetts consistently ranks in the top of “most moved from states.” People cite the rising cost of living and a desire to be closer to family as top reasons for leaving. The state has long been one of the most expensive states to live in, following Hawaii, California, and Washington State. Washington, D.C., is also expensive.
